Измерителем хозяйственной деятельности страны, получившим всеобщее признание, является показатель "валовой национальный продукт" (ВНП) (gross national product), который количественно характеризует общий размер дохода (включая амортизационные отчисления) от реализации товаров и услуг как на внутреннем, так и на внешнем рынке. На современном уровне международного разделения труда внешнеэкономические сделки осуществляются не только на двусторонней основе, но и через посредников, которыми являются как фирмы и финансовые учреждения третьих стран, так и транснациональные компании и международные банки. В целях выявления места и роли того или иного государства в мирохозяйственных процессах Секретариат ООН регулярно собирает от национальных статистических служб информацию на основе единых методологических принципов. В качестве международного стандарта уровня экономического развития национальной экономики рекомендовано использовать пока-затель"валовой внутренний продукт" (ВВП) (gross domestic product ), который, в отличие от ВНП, не учитывает чистые трансферты из-за рубежа.
